Frequently Asked Questions

1. I have a new scooter. How do I care for it?

First, you need to take it easy on your scooter for the first 100 miles or so. You have a brand new engine and you need to break it in gently. If you don’t and just go full speed all the time you could severely overheat and damage your new engine. We ask that you please vary your speed, and don’t take it full speed down any steep hills to see how fast you can get it to go. This can easily burn up your engine!

Then you must change the engine oil after the first 300 miles or within 90 days of first use. When you first get your scooter it comes with a very lightweight oil so that your engine will break in properly. After 300 miles your engine should be broken in, and you need to remove this oil and put in heavier weight oil. We recommend you use Bel-Ray 4 Stroke motorcycle oil 10W-40. You can always pick up an extra bottle from us when you purchase your new scooter.

Also at that time, you should change your gear oil and spark plug. We recommend Bel-Ray Gear Oil SAE 80W-90 (designed for motorcycles, ATVs, and scooters). There are several sizes for spark plugs, so we recommend you remove your old spark plug and take it to an auto parts store to get the correct size. You should ask for an NGK brand spark plug.

At this time you should also check and clean the air filter and intake area.

After you do these things, you need to repeat them every 1000 miles or 1 year, whichever occurs first.

We recommend you purchase a maintenance plan that includes the necessary services at a huge discount (in-home or in our shop). Otherwise, you can always have us do it for you for a small fee either at our shop or at your house.

2. What else can I do for my scooter to ensure it runs its best?

Make sure you regularly check the tire pressure to ensure that the tires are inflated properly. Typically they should be at 35 psi, but make sure you check the side of the tire wall for the specific pressure for your scooter.

Always fill the gas tank with premium gas as recommended by all the manufacturers. When you do add gas, we suggest you also add Star Tron fuel treatment to the gas. This helps keep the gas in your scooter fresh and cleans out the carburetor while you are driving it. We make sure that all our scooters that leave our store have premium fuel with the Star Tron fuel additive.

Install a battery tender onto your battery. This will allow you to charge your battery easily whenever you are not using it. We can install a Deltran Battery Tender for your battery on to your scooter at our shop.

Store your scooter indoors out of the rain if possible. Otherwise, cover it with a scooter cover to keep it looking its best.

3. It’s fall and I don’t plan on driving my scooter in the winter. What should I do?

First, ensure the gas in your gas tank and the carburetor is ready to sit all winter. One way to do this is by running your scooter completely out of gas so that none remains in the tank or the carburetor. If you do this it will take a little longer to start in the springtime because the gas needs to get to the engine. Otherwise, you can add Star Tron fuel treatment to the gas, and then make sure it is run through the engine after adding it.

Next, you need to remove the battery, fully charge it, and store it indoors. This battery is much smaller than your car battery, and if left outside could freeze in the winter. This would greatly decrease the life and power of your battery. Remember to charge your battery several times throughout the winter while it is being stored inside or leave connected to a Deltran Battery Tender.

Then make sure you don’t leave your scooter sitting outside in the snowbank all winter. This could cause your scooter to rust up, fade, or possibly cause electrical problems down the road.

Or bring it to us to do for you and store in our indoor heated warehouse.

4. It’s spring and time to get the scooter ready to ride. What should I do?

Fully charge the battery and reinstall it in the scooter.

Add gas back in the scooter if you ran it dry.

Change the engine oil, gear oil, and spark plug.

Check and clean the air filter and intake area.

Check the tire pressure.

Check all the bolts and screws to make sure they are still tight.

Start your scooter and let the engine warm-up.

Take your scooter for a quick test drive, checking all the lights, brakes, and ensuring it accelerates smoothly.

Or bring it to us or have us out to do it for you.

5. I am just getting my scooter out running for the year and nothing happens when I try to start it.

Make sure your battery is fully charged. If your battery is not giving enough power to start, bring in your battery to us and have it tested.

Check the battery terminals. Ensure red (positive) is screwed into red and black (negative) is screwed into black, and that they are tightened down securely. The red terminal should have a fuse wire attached along with the main red wire.

Make sure you don’t have the kill switch in the off position.

Remember to hold the brake lever when you try to start your scooter. Sometimes the small switch in the brake lever gets stuck in. Ensure that it is popping out indicating the brake handle is pulled. You can check this by looking at your rear tail light to ensure the tail light changes when you squeeze the brake lever.

6. My scooter is getting power, but it just won’t startup.

Caution: Don’t crank the engine over for extended periods of time without first letting the starter in the engine cool back down. Failure to allow the starter to cool can lead to a broken and burned up starter motor. Crank over the engine for only a few seconds at a time, then allow the starter a couple of minutes to cool back down.

The most common issue with starting an engine that we have found is having bad gas in the carburetor. There are several causes of this and even while using a fuel treatment this can still happen. The small jets inside a scooter carburetor can easily become plugged with debris from the ethanol in bad or old gas. To solve this problem you need to take the carburetor out and clean it. It is one of many service items that we can do for you.

Check the fuel and vacuum lines inside the engine to make sure that they are not pinched or have become cracked.

7. My scooter starts, but it doesn’t stay running.

It’s possible that the gas in your scooter is old and dirty. Add a fuel treatment such as Star Tron to your gas tank. Also if your gas tank is not full, you could mix in some new fresh gas with the older gas. It’s possible that after you get the scooter started you will have to give it gas and take it for a test drive to try to burn the bad gas out of the engine.

Also your idle might not be set right anymore. Your scooter is made to run great when the temperature is 60-90 degrees outside. In order to keep the scooter running well in a cooler temperature, you may need to adjust the idle on the carburetor. On many, but not all, of our models it will simply be a Phillips-head screw on top of the carburetor. Turn the screw a quarter to half turn clockwise to increase the idle or the same in the opposite direction to decrease it. When the weather warms up, you might need to adjust the idle again.

There are also several other things that could be going on. You can always bring your scooter up to us, and have our mechanic look it over and fix it for you.

8. I have a scooter I bought somewhere else and it is not working. Do you work on other scooters?

It really depends on the type of scooter. We can work on most of the scooters that come from China, and other off brands. If you have a Honda or other name brand scooter, it really depends on what you want us to do. Some of the scooters use a special computer diagnostic system. You have to go to an authorized dealer to have them work on it. We just don’t have all the equipment for every brand of scooter. Give us a call and we’ll let you know if we think we can be of help.

9. I have an old scooter and would like to upgrade to a new one. Do you take trade-ins?

Yes and no. It depends on what kind of scooter you have, how many miles are on it, and the condition. Feel free to stop in with it and we can see what type of credit we can give you towards a new scooter. As a general rule, you’ll be able to get more money for your old one by selling it yourself.

10. I recently purchased a new scooter or motorcycle from you, but would like to get a different one. What is your return policy?

If you'd like to return your new purchase, it must be returned within 7 days of purchase or 100 miles, whichever comes first. It must be in like-new condition. You will be charged a $200 (or 10% of MSRP: whichever is higher) restocking fee and a $3 per mile usage fee and any applicable bank charges. For example, if you put 50 miles on your scooter, and decided you wanted a larger one we would charge you $200 for the use you put on the scooter plus a $150 restocking fee. Any damage will also be charged to you for the cost to bring it back to like-new condition. If the machine is already licensed, all license fees and sales taxes are non-refundable.

11. Do you do service on anything other than scooters?

Yes, we also work on any product we sell and are a Full Line Yamaha Motorsports dealer.

12. Do you have any extra fees such as assembly fees, or fuel fees when I purchase my scooter or ATV?

Yes. We have a minimal Dealer Prep/Assembly fee added to all our products as instructed per our scooter and ATV vendors. We do our very best to keep our products as affordable as possible. The only other fees we add are sales tax, license, and document fees in addition to any optional delivery fees.

If you live in a state other than Minnesota then you would just pay the price of the product plus the Dealer Prep/Assembly Fee to us. We would then sign over the vehicle title to you, and you would have to register it with your state. You would then be responsible to pay your state whatever fees they require when you register it.

13. I lost my title to my scooter and didn’t register it with my state. Can I get another copy from you?

No. Legally we can’t provide any additional copies of a legal title to you. If we did the state could revoke our license to sell vehicles in the state of Minnesota.

14. Can I buy a scooter from you without driving all the way to Forest Lake?

Yes, just call us. You can purchase over the phone, pay for it with a credit card, and we can then deliver it out to you. You will need to be home with a valid ID when we deliver it to fill out the paperwork and sign the license forms.

15. Do I need insurance for my scooter?

Yes, the state of Minnesota requires you to carry liability insurance on your scooter. You can just call your insurance company, and they can help you add a scooter/motorcycle policy. Often it is not more than $10-$15 a month.

16. What is your return Policy on atvs, snowmobiles, and electric bicycles?

All atvs, snowmobiles, and electric bicycles must be returned within 7 days of purchase in like-new condition.  There is a $200 or 10% of MSRP(whichever is higher) usage fee on all electric bicycles, snowmobiles, and atvs as well as $3 a mile charge.  Any damage incurred to the unit will be charged to you against the amount refunded.  If the unit has already been licensed those fees are not refundable.

17. Do you carry all colors and models you show on the website?

We try to do our best to carry every model and color at all times. However, especially in the spring, our scooters sell pretty fast, and your color might not be in stock. Generally, if we are out, you can pay for the scooter you select and then we can order it in for you. It typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to get them in unless they are on backorder.

18. If something breaks on my scooter, where do I get parts

We carry many common parts in stock for your convenience. Give us a call at (612) 321-8867, and we can check to see if your part is in stock. If we don’t have it in stock, we should be able to order it for you, and it usually will take 1 to 2 weeks.

19. Do you charge a card processing fee?

We have a 3% surcharge on all credit, debit and 12-month financing transactions. There is no surcharge on cash, check or 6 month financing transactions.

20. What is your part return policy?

All returns must be completed within 10 days and require the original packaging and sales slip. There is a 20% restocking fee on all approved returns.

The following items can not be returned under any circumstance:

- Special Order Parts

- Electrical Parts & Components

- All Helmets
